day two

i'm on day two of *bed* rest, which has morphed into couch rest so that i can actually watch dvd's, surf the net, be somewhat close to the kitchen...

i just watched holmes on homes (god bless the obscene amount of channels that davoud has, which has brought the discovery channel back into my life), but to be honest i haven't been bound to the television. i did watch a great hitchcock movie yesterday afternoon called i confess from about 1950 that was filmed in quebec city. it really didn't look too much different from now to be honest.

i have brought some work along and will aim to do some of it everyday instead of doing it all on day one and then being completely bored. almost finished the blind assassin (sorry val!) and wrote some letters home this morning.

i have to say the highlight so far was listening to the canadian songwriter's hall of fame on cbc radio one from victoria last night. joni mitchell was being inducted and i was quite keen to hear herbie hancock and chaka khan's version of "help me"...awesome. james taylor speaking french was charming and he did a great folksy version of "woodstock."

best band name ever: the hurtin' albertans. how did we not come up with that at the cottage years ago when we were trying to name ellie's new band?

ah sugar - you rest up now. Don't muck about with your feet, now that you have them all soft and silky... ;)

Your blog came up when I typed Herbie Hancock and Chaka Khan. I listened to the same Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame CBC radio show about a month ago, and heard Chaka's version of 'Help Me'. All I can say is …she needed help! It was pretty sad. The odd thing was, I watched the CBC television special tonight, and instead of Chaka singing, it was Divine Brown with Herbie and it was just ‘devine’. I am very curious to find out what happened. Was Chaka’s performance so bad that they re-did it later in the show? Very curious. The other astonishing performance of was Canadian Opera Singer Measha Brueggergosman singing 'Both Sides Now'. It had to be one of the most thrilling vocal performances I have ever witnessed.

i think it was more the arrangement of 'help me' that i really enjoyed...and yes, the opera singer did blow me away, although i do have to admit it was odd to hear that song sung in that vocal style. i'm a sucker for the acoustic guitar.

would have love to have seen it on television...too bad they don't broadcast overseas.
