weeks keep flying

yesterday was uncle bill's funeral, which was all a bit surreal. that's all i'm going to say 'cause there's really not much more.

thanks to everyone who broke a match; i think it may have worked.

val and i went to ikea yesterday afternoon and i bought the final thing to solidify my room as my own: two shoe racks to stack as shelves. brilliant. i felt kind of *lost* with an afternoon off - which means i've definitely adjusted to routine - so i cleaned the house and made sam dinner. proper domestic goddess.

sam, kelly, lou, rich #1 and i went to 3345 last night for acoustic jams. i think i probably had an entire bottle of wine to myself - i know, not a smart thing to do on a school night - but i was having such fun. ian mcnabb (the dude from echo and the bunnymen) played some joni mitchell on the decks last night. he put on big yellow taxi, which is the most popular tune, but probably not my favorite. so i asked for some more and he substitued with neil young because if you're a decent dj i guess you just don't play two tracks by the same artist back to back. canadiana all around.

good news came my way via sam who called me on my mobile. i'm blessed with many things, but one of those is definitely the friend i've found in sam.

tours continue...

feeling a bit sunnier the past couple of days; still not entirely like myself but i can't help being a little distracted.

yesterday i got to go on another site visit at the museum - it's all part of the training apparently - and visited the ship restoration shed. they were working on this wooden boat from the napoleonic era and it was the only one of its kind left. (dad, you would have *loved* listening to these guys talk). we also got a tour of an old ship that some guy has been restoring for 20 years. as you can imagine, he had many tales to share.

i met sam #2 (friend i met at my induction day who works at the conservation centre, also part of nml) and his housemate huw (welsh version of hugh) for a brew after work and just had a chilled night at home.

super size me was on television last night...it was absolutely disgusting. and to be honest, i think that guy is an idiot. why would you ruin your body in a month when you don't know the long term effects just to try and prove a point that nobody's going to listen to anyway? that winds me up.

everyone break a match

bad things come in threes...an old saying that for some reason always seems to come true. so please, send out some nice thoughts into the cosmos for my grandad and my grandpa who need lots of endorphins from some wonderful peeps.

val and i went to visit irene on saturday afternoon - truth be told i was a little hungover, but i think irene found this kind of amusing, threatening to tell grandma and all - and she told me that if you want to stop a string of bad things happening, you have to break a match.

so begins the hunt for wooden matches. my mum's already broken one so everyone join in.

on a happier note, i spent 13 hours haning out at sof and harriet's house on saturday afternoon/evening/night/early morning playing backgammon, guitar, and mario kart. it was all very reminiscent of days with the stouffville boys as sof's friends from brighton seemed to each take on the personalities of my dear old friends.

don't know how to start this one...i know, amazing, lauren at a loss for words.

yesterday was crap all in all. after a manic day at work i got home really in need of a glass of wine. i called irene to see how things were going with uncle bill and she told that he died that morning. it was kind of a shock. i don't think anyone was really expecting it all to happen so fast.

as rich would say, you can go through all the cliche's of "oh, he's in a better place, back with lily" and i guess those things can give some people comfort. but the fact is that it just sucks and there isn't really much more to say than that.

yes, i'm sad, but this too shall pass. i'm really pleased that val's coming into town today. it'll be nice to have a little family support.

routine routine

yeah, it's happened. i think i've settled into the work, go home, do some stuff, go to sleep routine. it was only a matter of time.

yesterday at work was mad! all run, run, run and very reminiscent of my assistant days at concordia being pulled this way and that. i do admit that i like being busy though 'cause it makes the days pass that much quicker.

i got home last night and got crafty with cards as there are so many birthdays coming up. i think i'd received just enough macleans magazines to podge a few cards for birthdays...i do love to podge. unfortunately, it doesn't seem to exist in england so i had to settle for some acrylic medium. bah.

uncle bill is back in hospital, so that makes me a bit sad. please give loads of hugs to everyone today.

splash down!

the yellow duckmarine was thoroughly amusing. i'd never been on a tourist bus before, but i do have to say this one must be the best in the whole world. the vehicle was actually used in the normandy landings, which i found a bit eerie, and although we stalled only once i was a little worried about the safety.

although we were supposed to pass in front of rich's house and had arranged for rich #2 to be standing outside waving a flag, because of all of the road works in the city centre we didn't go down his street. the most hilarious part was the splash down! into the water, which evoked many screams from the folks in the back who got a bit wet.

everyone who comes to the pool must do this.

we then traipsed out to the heritage market and checked out the mish mash of merchandise, went for a meal, proceeded to have a few pints at doctor dunkins (absolutely fab pub...dad, you'd love it!) and then a bottle of wine at 3345. my sober saturday night made my body feel like i had to make up for lost time.

so i'm a little tired at work today, but i think i'll make it.

i ran into the woman who interviewed me for the john moores 24 exhibition officer job at the walker art gallery today and she was so apologetic for not hiring me! she was very pleased to hear that i'd found something and told me i should look out for development jobs as well. it was really kind of her and is a definite reflection of the attitude of this place. lovin it.

quiet nite in

john peel nite at 3345 was awesome. it was just acoustic sets and there is nothing else that inspires me more to be a guitar star...now if only i could play well...

it was a proper girls nite out for once as there always seems to be boys trailing along.

even though i was in bed at midnite the next day at work was a bit of a challenge. we were hosting a training day for facilitators of an exhibition and the trainer was an absolute diva. i'd never met a more demanding man in my life! we got through it in the end, but i was absolutely nackered when i got home.

sam and i got straight into our pj's and watched television and the most horribly jude law movie ever. actually the most horrible movie ever and we all know how much i love jude law.

i'm off to see uncle bill and irene this afternoon, out for dave's birthday dinner tonite (but will remain sober in solidarity with chris who has decided he's been drinking too much lately and is taking a sabbatical), and on the duckmarine tour with rich tomorrow. yippeee! we've been talking about doing that for months. i love touristy stuff.

john peel day

work schmork. i miss being unemployed...

but for those of you who are curious, work is going just fine. i think i've finally gotten used to the open concept office and people yelling across it quite frequently, being able to hear every phone conversation and generally no backstabbing since everyone can hear you! hooray!

i'm getting to do more event work than i originally thought, which is fine, and have been working on this 100 languages of children exhibition that opens tomorrow. it's all about how art etc. can be used to help children learn (dolly - angela would absolutely love this stuff!).

today is john peel day - infamous radio one dj who died a year ago today - and sam, jo, jo's housemates, kelly, lou and a variety of others are heading to 3345 (incidently the studio where coldplay recorded their last album) for an acoustic night hosted by ian mcnabb of echo and the bunnymen. much fun.

full day of training tomorrow...lots of tea please.

turkey day

i think this may become an annual event...

12 of my nearest and dearest from the past few months came round to the house for thanksgiving dinner including butternut squash soup, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and one very amazing deboned, free range, organic turkey. everything turned out absolutely perfectly. (shocking!)

about 15 bottles of wine were consumed including one of bubbly by sam and i ;)

i even made everyone go around in the circle and mention what they'd been most thankful for in the past year. lots of good feelings and thankful for me cooking them a big meal.

note to self: take inventory of sauce pans prior to next year so that we can add green beans to the menu.

also, hopefully i'll be able to get some pics up soon. i know there were a couple peeps there with a digital camera.

10.06.2005

working girl

sorry it's been so long folks, but i've been trying to earn a living.

work is good so far, a bit hard to get into i suppose, but it will all come in time. i cannot access hotmail at work, but they don't seem to have firewalled blogs yet. my coworkers all seem quite nice, but i have to admit its going to take me a while to get used to the open plan concept of the office.

no closed door policies here. and, by the way, this place kicks concordia's butt in terms of functionality. policies and procedures...yes please!

i'm still going to be hosting thanksgiving dinner on sunday and it turns out that now approximately 12 people are going to be attending. the story of how i got my turkey is one that must be shared...

so this past weekend a few of sam's mates from coventry came up to visit. one of the guys took a shine to me and when he found out i was having a thanksgiving dinner and couldn't find a turkey offered to find me one. so somehow he has hunted down a gobbler and is having an 8 kg, free range, organic turkey prestuffed with plum and ginger sent to sam's office on friday.

its totally hilarious. and as my dad put it...i don't have a sugar daddy, i have a turkey daddy.
